An immersion in the world of salt workers
From April to November, set off to discover the salt marshes and uncover the secrets of the salt of Guérande. From the salt worker village to the salt marsh, you will explore with a passionate guide the marshes on a walking route of 1.2 km.
On the agenda: a preserved environment, the beauty of a protected landscape, and the observation of the salt marshes where salt crystallises under the combined effect of the sun and the wind. And an authentic salt worker village, with its salt worker houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
In season, depending on the weather, you can witness the harvesting of salt and appreciate the ancestral gestures of the salt workers. A 25-minute documentary film about the work of the salt workers throughout the seasons is shown before the visit, free for all.
The village of Saillé, birthplace of salt
Breton village mentioned as early as the 11th century, Saillé owes its name Saliacum to its production of salt. The village gained importance when Duke Jean IV of Brittany and Jeanne of Navarre married there in 1386. Their great-granddaughter, Anne of Brittany, would later find refuge there during a plague epidemic.
Today, Saillé preserves its salt worker heritage: stone houses, narrow streets, active salt marshes all around. The Maison des Paludiers is located in the heart of the village and offers an ideal starting point to understand the salt marshes through the lens of those who sustain them.
At the end of the visit, do not miss the shop which offers fleur de sel, coarse salt, salted butter caramel, and many regional products.

Antonin's advice
“Compared to Terre de Sel, which is more institutional, I love the Maison des Paludiers for its authentic and village-like feel. The 25-minute film shown beforehand really helps to understand the work of the salt workers before going out into the field · the children engage better with the visit afterwards. Prefer morning in summer (the heat rises quickly in the afternoon over the marshes without shade). And take the opportunity to stroll around Saillé before or after the visit: it’s a real gem that few tourists take the time to discover.”
