An intact fortified town
A few kilometres north of La Baule, Guérande still stands with its intact medieval ramparts, a stone belt punctuated by towers and gates that encircle the old town.
You enter through the monumental Porte Saint-Michel, former residence of the governor, to wander through a maze of cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, shops and the Saint-Aubin collegiate church.
Strolling within the walls is free: it is one of the most remarkable heritage outings on the peninsula, perfect for a half-day visit.
Ramparts, moats and salt marshes
The walk around the ramparts from the outside, along the old moats, offers one of the most beautiful walks in the town. The walkway is open for visits (specific, paid visit).
All around stretch the famous salt marshes of Guérande, where fleur de sel is harvested: the ideal excursion to combine with a visit to the fortified town.

Antonin's advice
« My favourite itinerary: enter through the Porte Saint-Michel, walk around the ramparts from the outside along the moats, then get lost in the narrow streets. And above all, follow up with the salt marshes right next door: the light there is beautiful at the end of the day. Park outside the walls, it's easier. »
